Igman-Bjelašnica-Treskavica-Visočica

Description

The suggested national park Igman-Bjelasnica-Treskavica-Visocica is placed in central Bosnia, within the Federation of BiH, latitude 43°30’05” – 43°50’03” and longitude 7°58’12” – 18°24’33”. It belongs to Sarajevski and Hercegovacko-Neretvljanski canton. The main entrance to the site is located 15 km to the southwest from Sarajevo.

 

It contains 4 massifs (Igman, Bjelasnica, Treskavica, Visocica) built mostly out of Triassic limestone with dolomites towards the west. The whole area is between 495 m and 2 088 m high (Treskavica peak). It is a big mountain plateau, with widespread karst qualities and a number of calcareous phenomena. It is surrounded and divided by deeply truncated river canyons, including those made by Rakitnica and Neretva rivers. This area covers almost 85 000 ha and is completely spread within the territory of the Federation of BiH. The procedure on proclaiming beautiful mountains of Igman, Bjelasnica, Treskavica and Visocica a national park lasts for a couple of decades now.
